The carved shell Caemeo is an aspect of Torre del Creco, which attracts World Interest, and dates back from the times of the Ancient Roman Empire.

The innovation which the artisans of Torre del Creco have brought to the famed art of incision has been that of carving a merterial out of th exterior of a seashell, from which is created the actual Cameo.

The two kinds of shells from which Cameos are made are the Sardonyx Shells, found in the seas of the Bahamas, which have a brown color, and the Cornelian shells, found near the island of Madagascar which have an orange under color.

The shell is cut out to form oval forms, later to be smoothed off by the grinding wheel to obtain a perfect oval. After having obtained the oval, it is then sculptured to remove the whitish shell to reveal the background which creates the contrast in color. Since the Cameo's are carved from Shell they should not be bumped around or dropped, and cleaned with non-abraivsive cleaners, or soapy water.

The artisans of Torre del Greco have achieved an elevated artistic level in forming the profile in all its expressions.
Each cameo is beautifully different.
